Our Letter of Support to Alberta’s Premier, Danielle Smith
LGB Alliance Canada endorses Premier Danielle Smith’s and the Government of Alberta's Proposed policies regarding gender identity and minors.
We’re pleased to see the policies being proposed by Premier Danielle Smith and acknowledge they strike a balance. It’s promising to have watched these policy proposals be announced with compassion and sympathy as this topic can be divisive and emotional.
At LGB Alliance Canada, we uphold that support for youth navigating the reality of same-sex attraction is of paramount importance. And we also recognize that the teenage years are turbulent for all adolescents, which is why safeguarding cannot be compromised. Youth must not be rushed or encouraged to seek permanent biomedical surgical or life-altering psychosocial
interventions. These proposed policies help ensure that children can remain children, leaving permanent life-altering decisions for adulthood. As these policies are further developed, we’re hopeful that sex education continues to be grounded in sound science, and that the three sexualities — heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual — are not conflated with gender identity beliefs.
We’re also happy to see Premier Danielle Smith and the Government of Alberta take steps to protect women and girls in sport, while finding options for transgender athletes to compete safely in co-ed divisions. Sport has always been about fairness – increasing fairness is a positive for all athletes in Alberta.
Therefore, on behalf of LGB Alliance Canada and same-sex attracted Albertans and Canadians nationwide, we support Premier Danielle Smith and the Government of Alberta’s direction with these policy proposals to protect childhood development.
We trust that the dignity of same-sex attracted Albertans will be maintained, even as the Alberta government explores the complex topic of gender identity treatment and minors.
